Brisbane - New Farm and the Juggers

Posted by Nikki Ah Wong on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, In : Queensland

Recently I took a ferry trip down the Brisbane river to New Farm, a riverside suburb between the city and the airport.

I stepped off the ferry to the sound of a band playing “singing in the rain” and people absolutely everywhere. The winter sky was overcast and threatened a little rain, but mild temperatures mean people here can enjoy the outdoors all year around. There were people picnicking, relaxing, smelling the roses, celebrating birthdays, sleeping and hundreds more playing spor...

Turkeys in the Bush and Sausage Trees. - Annerley, Brisbane.

Posted by Nikki Ah Wong on Tuesday, June 29, 2010, In : Queensland

Annerley is a very convenient Brisbane suburb. From the higher parts of Annerley you can see the inner city Brisbane high rises and it is just a few stops on the train or 5 minutes by car to reach them. It is an older suburb and many of the homes are run down and need work. Annerley is an area ripe for development and gradually homes are being replaced with modern homes or blocks of units. The one I am staying in has a large garden so the new owners plan to demolish and replace in just a few ...

Ipswitch Region - Gone bush

Posted by Nikki Ah Wong on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, In : Queensland

Yesterday was another sunny day, so it was perfect for a cool walk in the Australian bush.

I followed a trail recommended and ended up in some interesting terrain.

The route in was cool and dark and the route out was steep and slippery with only a couple of logs for a bridge.(And it was longer than it looks)

I loved it.

These photos started me thinking. I have taken lots of photos of the beautiful Australian landscape so I am going to have to look out some of my favourites fo...

Redbank Plains, Brisbane - Treasure before Breakfast

Posted by Nikki Ah Wong on Saturday, April 17, 2010, In : Queensland

Today I had an adventure before breakfast. It was like a Bernstein Bear movie I remember.

Up the hill and through the long grass

Between the interesting and delightful obstacles people have left here

Over the rubbish and around the
tricky corner.

Past the scary crows eating from the supermarket rubbish bins
(There was about a dozen but the rest were too busy flying at me to have their photo taken.)
And ...... yes ..... I did take the scenic route

Down the hill and onto a treasure hunt...

Exploding Light Bulbs and Magnetic Tunnels

Posted by Nikki Ah Wong on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, In : Queensland

There is a new tunnel under Brisbane City. It is called the Clem7 and it runs for 4.8km under the city and river. They say you can avoid 24 sets of traffic lights in the city by using the tunnel.

I was heading into the city and I didn’t want to use the tunnel. I didn’t want to breathe the enclosed air. I didn’t want that claustrophobic feeling I get when I realise there are tons of earth on top of me… and … I didn’t want to pay the toll.

I tried to avoid it. Really I did. I w...

Seaworld on the Gold Coast

Posted by Nikki Ah on Thursday, March 25, 2010, In : Queensland

I have a new favourite theme park. Forget all the fast roller coasters and thrilling free falls. I am much more at home watching the dolphins and touching the stingray’s smooth sides as they glide past. There are loads of places to spend money, gift shops, food places, games, other rides helicopter, shows and a water park but the included activities were enough for me. What a wonderful place.

It has a nice wide open feel as you enter so is less claustrophobic than some theme parks....

Ipswitch Railway Workshops

Posted by Nikki Ah on Thursday, March 25, 2010, In : Queensland

I enjoyed a nice sandwich in the railway workshops at Ipswitch. I took over 5 minutes to decide whether to go into the workshop complex or not. At $18.50 it seemed expensive, but in line with my policy of taking time for experiences I finally went in. I wasn’t disappointed. It is a very interesting place and well worth a visit. Lunch wasn't cheap either but the sandwich was good and the cheesecake was divine.

As I was the only person there I was surprised to see sandwiches in the cabi...

Goondiwindi on the Queensland border

Posted by Nikki Ah on Thursday, March 25, 2010, In : Queensland

I am sitting by the banks of a very dirty river. It is the Mcintyre river and it represents the border between Queensland and New South Wales. In Goondiwindi they have made a feature of it with a nice walkway and a small amount of seating.

Despite the beautiful orange and pink sunset behind the trees on the other bank there is nothing inviting about the river. It is the colour of milky coffee and large bunches of something that could be tree leaves or pondweed float by...and yet I know...
